This book happens to be one of them. I was struck by the tenacity with which the authors pursued their goals and their unselfish endeavors. They snubbed marketers and pretty much did things their way in order to get the Newman's Own food line on store shelves.

So, just what should you do now? It's so easy, isn't it? Your soft documents book can be in our kitchen appliance or computer so you could delight in reading anywhere and each time if required.

From Publishers Weekly One of the most unusual philanthropic enterprises of the 20th century almost never happened: Newman's Own was the name intended for a restaurant the movie star wanted to open near his home in Westport, Conn.

But the idea never went anywhere, freeing up Newman to start a business in the early s with his friend Hotchner, a bestselling author Papa Hemingway , selling a salad dressing made from Newman's personal recipe. The rest is history. As this breezy memoir recalls, the two broke every rule for launching a new food business, ignoring the failure rate for celebrity-themed products, demanding all-natural ingredients and bypassing nearly every aspect of market research although they did hold one taste test at the home of local caterer Martha Stewart.

This part of the story doesn't really have a lot of meat to it, but it is an entertaining string of anecdotes, song parodies and wacky customer letters.

Then they were told that if fresh onion and garlic were added, it would spoil the dressing in short order, so they acquiesced, to their dismay. Later, they found the dried garlic and onion added a metallic taste they didn't like, so they insisted on the bottler finding a way to do it.

By marinating the fresh garlic and onion for two weeks in the vinegar, they were able to switch to all fresh ingredients! They were forced by federal law to get big! The next curve the world threw them, they hit out of the park.

Here's the play-by-play:. How else do you get their attention? You said you weren't going to advertise, so how will the customer know it's you? You will not be able to sell bottle one unless your face is on the label, that's for sure.

Not a chance in hell.
